Coffee has been a staple in our mornings, from the common man to the executive rooms; the aroma of freshly brewed coffee has become a morning welcome. Big players still dominate the scene, but a few local ones have also joined the party as a hub for connections in our neighborhoods, sometimes shaping a bit of the culture in the landscapes we live in.
Artisanal coffee has spread out to the provinces, too, and we feature GumorningNV, hailing from Nueva Vizcaya, as visually told to us by Francis Gumayagay for branding and marketing strategy and the type-based illustrator, artist, and designer Lloyd Zapanta who brought us instant classics like LL Baguio and baybayin ones like Baybayin Deko for graphics.
From GumorningNV:
Gumorning NV is a space built for and by Novo Vizcayanos, existing with the Novo Vizcayano experience at its core. We are dedicated to creating experiences that go beyond coffee, fostering a community where people can connect, discover, and celebrate what makes Nueva Vizcaya special.More than just a cafe, Gumorning NV is a multifaceted space—one that evolves through collaborations, pop-ups, cultural initiatives, and gatherings that bring people together. While our cafe is a big part of what we do, our identity goes beyond it, redefining what a cafe can be and introducing new ways for Novo Vizcayanos to experience their own home.
With every sip, every event, and every moment shared at Gumorning NV, we move closer to our vision—a future where Nueva Vizcaya stands as a recognized cafe destination in the Philippines—a place where coffee, culture, and community thrive together.
From Lloyd:
Combining with some icons from Nueva Vizcaya and the culture of luck, my work focused more on the typography that will appear on cups and merchandise. This simple typographic execution employs the letter “O” as a rising sun, reflecting Gumorning’s tagline: “It’s morning somewhere.”

The rest of the brand, the greens, the muted tones and the bright sunrise yellow, we attribute back to the vibrant nature of the province.
“It’s morning somewhere.”
This thoughtful branding, evident in everything from the logo to the merchandise, shows the power of design to connect with community culture. We hope to see more of this mindful approach, not just ones from Manila, but good design spread out to the rest of the country.
It’s morning somewhere, and good design is here, too.
